Be part of Paddington’s Living Heritage at St Mary Magdalene’s.

Do you enjoy talking to people and hearing their stories? Do you think you could help make community history lively and engaging for visitors?
We are looking for a team of volunteers to help with research and interviewing local people to bring the history of Paddington and St Mary Magdalene’s Church to life.

As a Heritage Pioneer you will:

  • Work as part of a team, and independently, to research the history of the Paddington area, its people, and the church.
  • Learn oral history skills and collect interviews, including recording, documenting and editing.
  • Work alongside the project team and other volunteers to turn research findings into appealing content for themed exhibitions.
  • Receive travel and subsistence for research visits to London Metropolitan Archives.
  • Benefit from training and development opportunities to support you in carrying out the role.
  • Be an ambassador for the Paddington’s Living Heritage at St Mary Magdalene’s Project.
    This will suit people who …
    Have an interest in community history, the history of the church and the heritage of Paddington, and who think they would enjoy using archives for research. Or those with an interest in talking to a diverse range of people about their experiences and collecting their oral histories. Those who would like to learn more about sharing knowledge with visitors in a lively way both online and through exhibitions.

    Time commitment: will vary to suit volunteer needs. Anticipate a minimum of a day commitment per month, but this is flexible to fit in with your schedule. Additional time will be required for training.

    Minimum 4 hour session.

Conservation Volunteering @ St Mary Mags

Currently on the ‘Buildings at risk’ register, St Mary Magdalene is a beautiful Grade 1 listed church widely recognised as George Edmund Street’s masterpiece in London. A Heritage Lottery Fund grant will now ensure that it can be enjoyed by future generations. Once this work is done the church will also serve as a bustling community and heritage space, but this will not be possible without a team of volunteers to assist the conservators with their work.
As part of the Conservation Volunteer team you will:

  • Work as part of a group of volunteers to share a sense of achievement as you bring back to life this extraordinary historic building.
  • Be amongst the first to re-discover its original vibrant colours and fine craftsmanship.
  • Explore a range of conservation tasks, including the opportunity to work on the painted ceiling.
  • Receive training in conservation principles and techniques.
  • Learn about careers in conservation, and the wider heritage and cultural sectors, while also gaining skills and experience transferable to other future employment.

This will suit people who…

  • Like working as part of a team, but also thrive when working independently.
  • Those who love the challenge of learning new skills and contributing something to their community!
  • Plus those with an interest in historic buildings and their care, or those interested in pursuing a career in conservation. All training is given – no prior experience is necessary.

Time commitment: will vary to suit volunteer needs.

From September 2017 we will be looking for the following volunteers:

Conservation volunteers: A rare opportunity to volunteer alongside conservators to restore St Mary Magdalene’s, a beautiful Grade 1 listed church!

Heritage Pioneers: Learn research and oral history skills to bring the history and heritage of Paddington to life as a Heritage Pioneer!

The afternoon will include: 

  • A talk from the Conservation Architect
  • London Metropolitan Archives reveal some North Paddington historical secrets
  • Try a hands-on conservation activity
  • Find out more about what makes a brilliant oral historian
  • PDT Employment Advisor on hand to advise on volunteering to get back to work
  • Tea and cake!

St Mary Magdaline on shortlist to receive heritage grant

Paddington church represents London on shortlist to receive heritage grant

st_marymags_webA historic church in Paddington has become the only church in London to be shortlisted for a new £10,000 grant from the National Churches Trust.

The Grade I listed St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Paddington is the only church in the capital, and one of only five nationwide, to be shortlisted to receive the Friends Grant. The purpose of the grant is to provide additional support for churches which have previously received funding from the NCT, and are carrying out extensive restoration and expansion work.

St Mary Magdalene’s was previously awarded a £40,000 grant from the NCT, to help fund a project for the restoration of the historic fabric of the building, cleaning and restoring the stunning interior. This is part of a wider project backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund that includes the construction of a new annex to provide new facilities and meeting rooms, allowing St Mary Magdalene’s to increase its provision in the local community.

The contenders shortlisted for the Friends Grant include churches based in Derby, Wirral, Paisley and Gloucester, with only St Mary Magdalene’s representing London. The recipient of the grant will be chosen by the Friends of the National Churches Trust, with the winner being announced on 3 July.

Fr Henry Everett, Priest at St Mary Magdalene’s church said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised out of all the churches in London and shortlisted for this grant. The funding we have received so far will allow us to help restore St Mary Magdalene’s church to its former glory, and also begin expanding our facilities so that we can play a much greater pastoral and cultural role in the community. There are countless historic churches in London which do vital work, and we are very grateful for the NCT for choosing St Mary Magdalene’s as a potential recipients for this new grant.”

First of all a huge thanks to all who have supported and attended our recent events at St Mary Magdalene’s. It’s wonderful to see the church come alive in the way that it can.

PDT with St. Mary Magdalene’ in Partnership with Westminster Adult Education Service invite you to attend the Winter Festival at St. Mary Magdalene’s.

On the 21 Saturday 1-3pm at St. Mary Magdalene’s Church you can expect to be spoiled with an array of fun activities for you and your children. Crèche, music and refreshments will be provided.

All Souls’ Day

On Wednesday evening the 2nd of November the community came together and a Solemn Mass was held at the St Mary Magdalene Church, Paddington, in commemoration of all the departed. The orchestra and choir of the St.Mary Magdalene Music Society, and Sussex House Choir, performed the Requiem by Gabriel Faure. After the mass a private viewing of Carolyn Barker-Mill’s new paintings and works were shown in the crypt of this magnificent church. The exhibition will run from the 3-8th November.

New paintings and works on paper private view 2nd November 9pm exhibition runs 3-8th November, 11am-6pm the Crypt, St Mary Magdalene Church, Rowington Close, Little Venice, W2.

Step through the wardrobe door or rather into the dark mysterious crypt of St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington to enter not Narnia but two equally far flung, exotic and romantic worlds; Bryher on the Isles of Scilly and New Mexico. New work painted en plain air in sometimes testing conditions by Barker-Mill, brings the colour, romance and energy of these lands into the surprising environment of a grade 1 listed Victorian high gothic church in Little Venice. The intimate scale of the paintings echo our place in the world and their tenderness and fragility evoke our own relationships and feelings of wonder towards our loved ones and nature. An added bonus is that before the private view on 2nd November at 9pm, there will be an opportunity to hear Faure’s Requiem performed liturgically in the full orchestral version as a Solemn Mass for All Souls’ Day, starting at 7.30 in the Victorian Splendour of St Mary Magdalene Church.

Pompe, Pompe, Pompe with Galitzine Mackenzie in the spirit of Dionysus!

A tragic-comic canal procession of art performances and music from Regents Park to a remarkable crypt underneath Saint Mary Magdalene Church.

Be a part of Pompe – the name given to the processional element of the events practiced by the cult of Dionysus.

Together we will celebrate the spirit of Art and using fleeting nature of performances mock the domineering commercialism in the art world represented by Frieze Art Fair.

The site of Frieze will be the departure point for the canal boat ‘Dazzler’ captained by a canal resident Robert Salomon. Pompe will encounter performances by young artists, musicians and dancers on bridges and tow paths referencing and
including members of the local community and landmarks.

For Pompe Dionysus is present in his role as the great liberator from the self-conscious; his wine, music and dance frees his followers and subverts the oppressive restraints of the powerful. He is the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and symbolises the chaotic, dangerous and unexpected acting as a perfect rebel figure. Thus, Pompe aims to reinforce the power of contemporary art and help liberate it from subservience to commercial forces and government stipulations.

St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington

The church, together with Paddington Development Trust, is raising funds to create a community and heritage hub as well as support restoration of the church building.

It is a Grade 1 listed church and is recognised as an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture. This Development Project aims to transform the building into a heritage, community, culture and arts hub in order to enrich, regenerate and bring greater cultural cohesion to the local area.
