Sir Simon Jenkins
hosted a reception at St Mary Magdalene’s on 26th June, marking the imminent start of building work on the Project, and celebrating successful fundraising to get us this far.

We were delighted to be able to thank some of those who have funded us already and to introduce some new friends to ways in which they can support the Project as we go forward. Sir Simon Jenkins, in his speech, said that St Mary Mags was showing the way in empowering the community to share responsibility for the parish church, which is the community’s building.

Animals in the Light, Art Exhibition

invitation square

ANIMALS IN THE LIGHT, Curated by Rickshaw House Gallery.

A multi-dimensional cross-section of different forms of art, illuminated by coloured rays in a dark crypt. Private View 18th June 2017 at 6:30pm. The creative mission of Rickshaw House Gallery is to present art in new, uncharted forms. This exhibition seeks to celebrate our relationship with animals.

Animals have accompanied humans since time began, and their relationship with us has changed over the years. In Greek and Roman mythology, there are many stories about animals. Let’s remember the legend of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, brothers fed by a mother wolf. There is also a legend about goose, which saved Rome from attack.

The Bible also contains stories about animals. Prophet Jonah found himself in the belly of a whale, and Daniel hid in a lion cave and left safely. Noah built The Ark in order to save animals from a flood. Currently, domesticated animals are the closest to humans. They’re our friends and often even our carers, for those who are older or disabled. Many of them also have therapeutic skills.

Animals can also be a topic or motif in art. An artist can show how animals look in real life but primarily how they imagine them. Artist create a world of imagination, their own fantasies, and different creatures may live there.

Due to the upcoming renovation of St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Paddington, this event is the last chance to see such a unique exhibition in this beautiful venue. FREE ENTRY

Revive! invites a discovery and exploration of the mysterious crypt underneath St Mary Magdalene Church

Revive! invites a discovery and exploration of the mysterious crypt underneath St Mary Magdalene Church built by George Edmund Street, a highly original, influential and radical Gothic Revivalist architect.

The artists have created site-specific works to reinvent and reinterpret this intimate space exploring issues such as ritual and spirituality, memory and presence, death and transfiguration and the notion of revivalism in our post-Brexit Britain and after Trump victory.

Revive! is the second part of a two-fold project began by Pompe and devised in reaction to Frieze Art Fair. The Dionysian procession led its followers along Regent’s Park canal via a series of performances and culminated in the crypt where Revive! will take place.

Participating artists: STASIS, Pavel Pepperstein, Adam Barker-Mill, Hans Rosenström, Carolyn Barker-Mill, Alan Magee, Jonathan McCree, Niklas Gustafson and Col Self.

Galitzine MacKenzie’s exhibitions are often motivated by a desire to draw attention to and include local communities. Revive! continues this ambition. The church, together with the Paddington Development Trust, are raising funds to create a community and heritage hub in order to enrich, regenerate and bring greater cultural cohesion to the local area as well as to support the restoration of the Grade 1 listed church building. Revive! aims to draw attention to this cause and the project will reach out to various vibrant community groups active in the area.

Please donate generously here to their cause and help make this project a reality.

Pompe, Pompe, Pompe with Galitzine Mackenzie in the spirit of Dionysus!

A tragic-comic canal procession of art performances and music from Regents Park to a remarkable crypt underneath Saint Mary Magdalene Church.

Be a part of Pompe – the name given to the processional element of the events practiced by the cult of Dionysus.

Together we will celebrate the spirit of Art and using fleeting nature of performances mock the domineering commercialism in the art world represented by Frieze Art Fair.

The site of Frieze will be the departure point for the canal boat ‘Dazzler’ captained by a canal resident Robert Salomon. Pompe will encounter performances by young artists, musicians and dancers on bridges and tow paths referencing and
including members of the local community and landmarks.

For Pompe Dionysus is present in his role as the great liberator from the self-conscious; his wine, music and dance frees his followers and subverts the oppressive restraints of the powerful. He is the protector of those who do not belong to conventional society and symbolises the chaotic, dangerous and unexpected acting as a perfect rebel figure. Thus, Pompe aims to reinforce the power of contemporary art and help liberate it from subservience to commercial forces and government stipulations.

Neil Luck & Adam de la Cour, Zoe Marden, STASIS, Imogen Lloyd, James St Findlay & Harvey Lancaster Rous, Well Suited, Guilded Music and Eloise Lawson.

St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington

Pompe is made possible thanks to the support of St Mary Magdalene Church.

The church, together with Paddington Development Trust, is raising funds to create a community and heritage hub as well as support restoration of the church building.

It is a Grade 1 listed church and is recognised as an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic architecture. This Development Project aims to transform the building into a heritage, community, culture and arts hub in order to enrich, regenerate and bring greater cultural cohesion to the local area.

Magic of Light view images

Rickshaw House Gallery  presented art in new, uncharted forms between June – July 2016. The exhibition celebrated light and our relationship with it, including the symbolism attached to the symbiotic nature of light and darkness. The exhibition included play with coloured lights, lasers and shadows; due to the upcoming renovation of St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Paddington, this event was the last chance to see such a unique exhibition in this beautiful venue and as you can see, was very popular and well attended.
